Development of heat recovery systems for high-temperature processes for disruptive technology shift in nitric acid and  nitrogen fertilizer production

Swedish Enegry Agency

SUNIFIX® is a climate-neutral plasma process patented by NitroCapt. Since the 1920’s, the Haber–Bosch process has been used for ~100% of all production of nitric acid and nitrogen fertilizer globally. It is an $80 billion market, contributing ~2.5% of global fossil-based greenhouse gas emissions.

The transition to fossil-free “Green Haber–Bosch” is expected to be slow due to a very high cost.

SUNIFIX® is expected to disrupt this market with a roadmap to reduce energy consumption compared to the best available grey ammonia technology. It adds the possibility to operate on variable power, allowing for beneficial PPAs and even off-grid operation.

In an earlier project financed by Energimyndigheten, NitroCapt developed its pilot plasma reactor. In this project, the goal is to develop a novel high-temperature heat recovery system — a component needed to outcompete the Haber–Bosch energy efficiency and make SUNIFIX® the new state-of-the-art nitrogen fixation technology.
